Our Story
Sangeetcar celebrates the folk artist and folk music of India. Historically, India has been an agrarian society that has depended on the oral tradition for transmitting its heritage and culture. However, with the passage of time, folk musicians have been experiencing difficulties in earning enough and have started taking up other occupations to fill their and their family's stomachs.
Sangeetcar values our rich traditions, customs, and values, and how they have contributed to the richness that is Indian culture and thus, strives to preserve them for future generations. Sangeetcar thus seeks to create a space where folk artists can participate in the preservation of their heritage and music, where their children can see that their musical traditions are valued and honoured, and the world can see the wonder that is indian folk music.
How do we do this?
Well on paper it’s simple, set up mikes, camera, lights and action. We had the artist, we had the location, we had the equipment, the drive, the passion. On the first day of our shoot artists decided that 10:00 am was too early and came for recording a little before noon. We had arrived at 5:00 am and were ready by 6:45. When the artist turned up after their equivalent of “just 5 minutes” they were rather earnest about being late.
We were indeed the invincible 6, hence we stayed with the artist and became their wake up call. Their kitchens were stocked, minimal bedding was arranged and the next day we were ready to shoot. We were up at 3, reached the location at 4, the artists were woken up with tea and biscuits, and taken to the location at 5. After 6-7 months and countless hours of shooting later, the Sangeetcar team decided it was time to head back to home base and commence on our edit.
